Model cop's story immortalized in film
On April 17, 2004, about 140,000 residents in Dengfeng, Henan Province poured onto the streets, to say goodbye to their much respected police chief Ren Changxia, killed in a car accident three days before. The story of the 40-year-old model policewoman, noted for her moral integrity in the face of corruption, her intimacy with local people, and toughness towards criminals, has been recorded by director Song Jiangbo in his latest work entitled "Police Officer Ren Changxia," which premiered at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Starring mainland actress Zhang Yu in the lead role, actors Wang Qingxiang and Wu Jingan, and Hong Kong actor Eric Tsang, the feature film tells the story of the last 36 hours of Ren's life, during which she led an investigation into a brutal homicide. A native of Zhengzhou, capital of Henan Province, Ren's ashes were interred in Dengfeng late last week at the request of local people. In her two decades-long career as a police officer, she became something of a living legend. Her drive for excellence won her several national accolades as one of the top young police professionals in the nation and in 2002 she was named one of the top 10 distinguished women of China. In her three years tenure in Dengfeng as police chief, Ren built up a highly efficient team. She also established a regular open office day at which she would meet with local people personally to hear their grievances. But not only did she lead a crackdown against crime, she also worked to help the victims, some of whom she personally gave donations to. Ren also adopted Liu Chunyu, a 14-year-old orphan. Her untimely death saddened not only her relatives and friends, but also local people from all walks of life who had come to respect her and the service she gave to their community. The film is a co-production by Changchun Film Studio, Shanghai Dragon Television Station, and several other institutional investors from Beijing and Shanghai. It will be put on general release across the country by the Shanghai Media Group.
