Joe Cole insists he is ready to move "into a great part of my career" as he spelt out his determination to build on the success of last season with Chelsea and England.

Cole finally established himself as a first-choice player at club and international level with England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson hailing the midfielder and Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher as the most improved players in the country. But Cole will not be content to rest on his laurels at the beginning of a crucial 12 months culminating in next summer's World Cup finals in Germany.

Cole told PA Sport: "I didn't want last season to end. I wanted to keep going, to keep the momentum going. If I could have decided, I would have kept on playing right through the summer - although a rest is nice as well."

He added: "Last season has given me a lot of confidence. I always believed I could do the business at the top level, like the Champions League and international level.

"But last season I actually did it - and proved it - and that has given me even more confidence. I feel this is just the start of things for me. I reckon I've served my apprenticeship.

"Last season I did what I wanted to do, winning trophies, playing regularly for the best club in the country and playing more for my country.

"I need to kick on again next season. I have to build on that success and not just sustain it and not just be happy with what I did last season.

"There is a lot more I want to do. I'm ready to move into a great part of my career with Chelsea and England. It was hard graft at first at Chelsea but it's all been worth it and 100 times more."
