Italian gunman arrested after killing three
An Italian man who shot three people dead and injured eight others was arrested after a police raid on his home, following a siege in the northern town of Bogogno, carabinieri paramilitary police said. The man, a former soldier and a keen hunter, started his shooting spree after bailiffs came to repossess his home. "They wanted to take my house," he said as he was being taken away. The nine-hour stand-off was ended after six elite carabinieri officers stormed the house. The drama began mid-afternoon Monday in the town of Bogogno, near Novara, after a bailiff accompanied by police officers arrived at the home of Angelo Sacco, 51, with orders to seize his property and evict him, police said. The man then took a gun and opened fire, witnesses said, killing Claudio Morsuillo, 39, who was working on behalf of the the Novara court. Sacco then opened fire on a police van and passersby. Three people were killed, including the bailiff, whose body was inside the house, and a policeman. Eight people, six of them policemen, were wounded. A 35-year-old woman was seriously injured with stomach wounds. Sacco then shut himself in his three-storey house, armed with a shotgun and a pistol. His mother, sister and an aunt were also in the house, barricaded into the ground floor. He fired shots on the street for several hours, preventing the emergency services from recovering the bodies of his victims. Police cordoned off the area and a special police intervention unit was in place. At around 10:00 pm (2000 GMT) electricity was cut off in the area for several minutes. Two hours later the elite force raided the building, meeting with no resistance. Sacco had not answered the telephone or replied to appeals made by police megaphone. A friend of Sacco, Franco Carbonari, said he was a former soldier and a hunting enthusiast adding that "he is an excellent shot". "Sacco was found sitting on a couch in his boxer shorts," local prosecutor Corrado Canfora told reporters. "Our orders were to take him alive. The raid lasted seven seconds between the explosion which took the front-door off and the capture of Sacco," the officer in charge of the operation said. "We used irritant gas to stun him. He was sitting in a couch with a startled expression. We told him we were police but he said nothing. He was not carrying any weapons but they were in the next room," said the officer who did not give his name.
