1.5 million Chinese die of apoplexy each year

About 1.5 million Chinese die of apoplexy each year on average, making the disease the secondlargest killer and the leading cause of physical deformity in the country, according to the Chinese Medical Association (CMA).

Wang Yongjun, a professor with the association's neurologybranch, said that currently 7 million Chinese suffer from apoplexy, two-thirds of which will plagued by deformities after survivingthe disease, becoming heavy burdens on both their families andsociety.

He warned that the number of apoplexy patients might double in2020 if preventive measures are not taken soon.

Lu Chuanzheng, director of the neurology branch at the CMA,said efforts should be made to educate the general public aboutthe severity of the disease, including creating an "ApoplexyEducation Day" in the country.
