Old man escapes wild elephant rampage by feigning death Li Peizhi, a 67-year old farmer in Jinghong City of southwest China's Yunnan Province, survived a raid by wild elephants by feigning death. Li went to the Mengyang state nature reserve early Tuesday morning to pick up mushrooms for sale at a local market. Unfortunately, he ran into an "array" of seven wild elephants at amounta in path when he was ready to pick up a pile of fresh mushrooms. With poor vision, Li didn't know he was already surrounded by elephants. Suddenly, he was attacked by the male guard elephant and thrown ten meters away. Knowing that the survival chance is very slim before more attacks were launched, Li tried his best to feign death by lying on the ground with eyes closed and breath held. The furious guard elephant took close surveillance of Li, strolling around him for almost ten minutes to make sure he was dead. Minutes later, when the sounds of wild elephants diminished, Li stood up and ran home, with three fractures in his arms. According to local regulations, people attacked by wild animals in the natural reserve will receive compensation on the condition that they engage in normal production. Li is therefore excluded, since picking mushrooms is not a necessary production activity. Li is currently being hospitalized.
