A team of specialists for pests control was mobilized to clear locusts that have plagued over the wasteland in East China's Shandong province.

The 2,500-member team was divided into 55 groups spreading around counties near the mouth of the Yellow River.

The provincial agriculture authority said on Wednesday that they were on high alert to any possible locust attack.

They have deployed two crop-dusting planes to spray insecticide in the locust-hatching area since June 16.

The Agriculture Ministry warned in May that this year could be a tough time for pest control, as the locusts were predicted to affect 26.6 million hectares of land nationwide.

Shangdong, important base for China's grain production, have been suffering locust attacks for six summers since 2000.
