Yanal steps down as Turkey coach Turkey coach Ersun Yanal was forced to resign on Wednesday following a run of disappointing results inWorld Cup qualifying, putting an end to his four-year deal with Turkey Football Federation. "We have parted ways with (Yanal). The decision was made mutually and in a friendly manner," said Turkey Football Federation chief Levent Bicakci in a statement. "Decisions need to be taken as an institution, with consistency and beyond personality." Yanal, replacing Senol Gunes, signed four-year deal in April 2004 and it was hoped he would revive Turkey's fortunes after theyfailed to qualify for Euro 2004. But the team are second in World Cup Group Two, seven points adrift of runaway leaders Ukraine. The coach had also been criticized by the media for dropping experienced striker Hakan Sukur from his squad. Turkey shone at the 2002 World Cup finals, finishing in third place. Yanal was previously in charge of first division club Genclerbirligi.
