Tsang appointed chief executive of HKSAR

Donald Tsang, 60, was appointed Tuesday by the State Council, or the Chinese central government, as new Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

According to a decree signed Tuesday by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, Tsang will assume his office on June 21 and his term will expire by June 30, 2007.

Tsang resigned from the position as chief secretary of the Hong Kong SAR on May 25 to run for the chief executive election and won on June 16 supported by 714 members of the Election Committee.
