Round up time for cell escapees

SHANGHAI: Freedom for over half of the 22 prisoners involved in a violent break-out last week was short-lived. One only managed an hour on the street before being picked up, while others, thanks to tip offs by the public, were rounded up in the ensuing days.

And police in Shanghai, from whose holding cells they staged a mass escape, have vowed to pull out all the stops to capture the rest.

Officers have been staking out rail and bus stations, ports and other transportation hubs in the area in their hunt.

Ironically the escapees were only in custody in the city's suburban Minhang District facing relatively minor offences. Now they face charges which could put them away for a considerable time.

"Up to now 11 people were recaptured and two surrendered," Ma Lanjing, Shanghai Public Security Bureau spokesman said at the weekend.

Two were captured by police officers in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province and two in Jiading, Zhejiang Province.

Hotels and taxi drivers were alerted to be on the lookout and descriptions of the fugitives were circulated.

Earlier reports said that thousands of taxi drivers had been tipped off to keep an eye out for them.

And police have visited family members of those still at large, urging them to persuade the fugitives to give themselves up.

"Those two attacked officers are getting better," said Ma, referring to the officers injured during the attack on Thursday.
