HANGZHOU: Three students who celebrated the end of their college entrance exam by robbing a woman have been caught by police in Cangnan County, East China's Zhejiang Province.

The boys went on a drinking binge after they had completed their final exam on June 8.

However, too much alcohol changed what could have been a happy story into one with a bad ending.

Late at night they snatched a woman's handbag, which contained 4,000 yuan (US$480), in a dark lane in an urban area of the county to get more money to carry on drinking.

Two hours later, the police caught them as they tried to throw the empty handbag into a river.

"I was too excited and did not think a lot at that moment. The only thing we were concerned about was getting money to have more drinks," one of the three boys told the police.

The three boys, who come from the countryside and studied in a school in the county, all expressed regret about the fact they will now miss the chance to go to university, said Yan Juexu, a policemen.

One student always performs well at school and was expected to win selection to a famous university. When he saw his heart-broken mother in tears, he knelt down to say "sorry," according to Yan.

The students, two of whom are under 18, will face a court appearance, Yan said.

The local government is now taking measures to avoid such incidents happening again.

Students finishing the college entrance exam or the senior high school entrance exam are required to attend law and ethical education classes at school.
