Norway advance to Women's Euro semis

Updated: 2005-06-13 13:56

Two-time champion Norway claimed the final semifinal spot at the Women's European Championship on Sunday after Germany beat France in the other Group B match.

Norway, which won the European title in 1987 and '93, beat Italy 5-3 while three-time defending champion Germany blanked France 3-0. France needed only a draw to advance.

On Saturday, Sweden and Finland each won to earn semifinal spots from Group A. The Swedes beat host England 1-0, and Finland held on to edge Denmark 2-1.

In the semifinals, Germany will face Finland on Wednesday in Preston, and Sweden will play Norway on Thursday in Warrington.

The final is scheduled for next Sunday in Blackburn.

If both Germany and Sweden win, the final will be a rematch of the 2001 championship game, which Germany won in extra time. The Germans also beat Sweden in extra time in the 2003 Women's World Cup final.

In Warrington, Inka Grings, Renate Lingor and Sandra Minnert scored a goal each in the second half for Germany.

In Preston, Lise Klaveness scored a goal in each half for Norway, which also won the Women's World Cup in 1995.

Marit Fiane Christensen, Solveig Gulbrandsen and Dagny Mellgren also scored for Norway, while Melania Ganniadini scored two for Italy and Elisa Camporese got the other.
