Iran Musharraf says gas pipeline benefits Pakistan, India, Iran Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf Tuesday said the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline was an important project and its implementation was in the interest of all the three countries, according to the Associated Press of Pakistan. Talking to Indian Petroleum Minister Mani Shankar Aiyer in Rawalpindi, twin city of Islamabad, Musharraf said that, with growing economies, the energy needs of Pakistan and India would rise. "The sooner the arrangements are made, the better will be," he said. Referring to the Pakistan-India relations, Musharraf expressed his satisfaction at the progress on confidence building measures ( CBMs) implemented so far by the two countries. He emphasized that the CBMs should move in tandem with resolution of problems between India and Pakistan including the core issue of Kashmir. Aiyer, who arrived here Saturday for talks on the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project with his Pakistani counterpart, informed Musharraf about the talks. Pakistan and India Monday formed a joint working group to get the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project "off the ground" early next year. Indian Petroleum Minister Aiyar said at a press conference after a meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz here Monday that the group would initiate interaction between officials and technical, financial and legal experts of the two countries to start to implement the project early next year. |
