Police arrested 12 suspects and seized 42 tons of methamphetamine in eastern China in the country's biggest drug bust this year, the government said Tuesday.

The suspects were members of a Chinese gang with ties to Burmese drug traffickers, the Ministry of Public Security said.

The arrests were made June 5 after an investigation that began when Chinese police discovered a methamphetamine lab on April 20 in the eastern city of Fuyang in Anhui province, the ministry said.

``This is the largest methamphetamine production and smuggling ring Chinese police have busted this year,'' said Liu Yuejin, deputy director of the ministry's narcotics control bureau, quoted by the official Xinhua News Agency.

Police also seized 10 tons of ephedra, an herb used in methamphetamine production, the ministry said.
