Vice Minister Ministry of Construction Qiu Baoxing said at a press briefing that China has established a relatively complete system for disposal of wastewater and standard research, design, and water quality supervision in the field.

He said 45 percent of the waste water had been treated by the end of last year in China's urban areas, up from the 33 percent five years ago, thanks to the rapid infrastructure construction, especially the pipeline networks.

The official notes China will continue to tighten up management of the water resources in both the urban and rural areas to secure enough drinking water for the cities and to step up efforts in promoting water supply through market forces and establishing monitoring systems.

Qiu Baoxing also announced Beijing will host the fifth World Water Congress of the International Water Association in September of next year. There, China will borrow from the world's advanced technologies, theories, and successful experiences to promote the country's water related industries.

Also, China's Ministry of Construction will host the country's first international seminar on water industry development strategies in the urban areas and exhibitions of water disposal technologies and facilities.
