Successful Olympiacos coach resigns amid internal strife
Dusan Bajevic resigned on Wednesday as head coach of Olympiacos, just one week after leading the squad to double titles in Greece including a league and a cup.
Despite another successful domestic campaign, Olympiacos, lack of achievements outside of Greece, could not get past the Champions League group stage, which has come under severe criticism and triggered great anger from the club's stars like Brazilian Rivaldo and Giovanni and the staunch fans. He resigned after a board meeting in the day. "I believe that unity in a team is the most important ingredient for its success. By staying with Olympiacos, the team would not have that next season," Bajevic, who had taken charge atthe start of the season, said in a statement. He said he did not want any financial compensation from the club and added that he had not been able to live up to the club's desire for success in Europe. "Maybe my powers were not enough to fulfill the European dream that they want so much at Olympiacos," he said. "What we need to decide is whether we want a coach with a Greekmentality or one with a European mentality, one with objectives in Europe and not just here," Rivaldo, the Brazil World Cup striker told the national television last weekend. Javier Irureta, until Tuesday coach of Deportivo Coruna, one of Rivaldo's former teams, is reportedly to be mooted as a likely replacement.
