Asian league planned An "Asian Cultural League" is being drawn up to foster regional dialogue among 49 countries and regions in Asia. The idea has come from the Asian Cultural Co-operation Conference which was held in Beijing three days ago. "We should attach importance to protecting a diverse cultural environment because it is a driving force for progress in human society," said Li Tieying, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress. Hosted by the Chinese Culture Promotion Society, the three-day conference ended yesterday. Representatives of cultural non-government organizations and related departments from the Chinese mainland, India, Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, the Republic of Korea, Mongolia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Thailand, Turkey, Viet Nam, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan Province attended. The representatives unanimously favoured China's proposal to establish a regional cultural co-operation organization and an "Asian Cultural Fund," next year. Aiming for better protection of multi-culturalism in Asia, the league will be set up on a voluntary basis with the support of Asian governments and civil societies. The Asian Cultural Fund, to be founded in Hong Kong with a starting capital of US$50 million, most raised from civil society, will provide financial support for multi-cultural activities on the continent. "We hope to see a better united cultural community in Asia," said delegate Kalyan Charkravarty, Member Secretary of the India Gandhi National Centre for Arts. (China Daily 05/31/2005 page2) |
