Shanghai is to open its first rehabilitation centre for children suffering from Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD), the compulsive use of the Internet.

The centre, which will officially open in a couple of months, is now being prepared, according to DRM, a US-based education consultation organization that is setting up the unit.

DRM launched the project two months ago and has since been busy training its consultants.

The company plans to survey teenagers from 38 schools in 18 districts, together with the city's Communist Youth League, which oversees affairs for teenagers.

"This is a very meaningful programme. We would like to co-operate with DRM," Cao Liping, from the Youth League, said.

He said test cases have now been chosen and initial tests will begin next month.

The founding of the centre in Shanghai is seen as a boon by the city's worried parents.

Fang Houhua, mother of a senior high school student, said: "It is great to have such a rehabilitation centre here."

Her son will soon take part in the important national college entrance examination, but he still tries to spend every minute on the Internet.

Fang's son is just one of a vast pool of Internet addicted teenagers.
