Taiwan's alternative singer Sandee Chan beat big-name competitors, pop star Jay Chou and Singapore's songstress Stefanie Sun, to take the top prize at Taiwan's annual Golden Melody Awards.

"I am in shock, I never thought I would win," Chan said at the ceremony in southern Kaohsiung city while receiving the best Mandarin pop album award.

"I hope we all can have fun playing music," she added.

Chan, the night's dark horse, also took home the prize for best producer for her album "When We All Wept in Silence".

This year's awards were not without surprises as Taiwan's RetB prince Chou went home empty-handed, despite leading the nomination list with six nods for his "Chi Li Shiang" (Seven Mile Fragrance).

Another dark horse, Stanley Huang, formally of the boyband LA Boyz, upset top favorites Chou and Wang Leehom to win the best Mandarin male singer prize.

Huang's album "Hei De Yi Nian" (Shades of My Mind) blends hip hop, rock-n-roll and electronic music in his trademark style.

Singapore's Sun staged a successful comeback to the music scene by beating Taiwan's pop diva A-Mei and Malaysia's crooner Fish Leong to garner the best female Mandarin singer award with her latest album "Stefanie".

Singapore's Wayne Lin, winner of last year's best Mandarin newcomer award, was nominated for the best composer but lost to Taiwanese aboriginal star Biung Wang.

Wang's "Chou Fang De Ren" (Walking with the Wind) -- his first Mandarin album -- fuses traditional Bunun tribal folk music with pop rock. He won best non-Mandarin male singer in 2002.

Pop rock band F.I.R formed by Ian Chen, Faye Chan and Real Huang defeated three soloists, including Singapore's Huang Yida, to collect the best Mandarin newcomer award with their debut album "F.I.R."

Canadian recording artist Matthew Lien won best cross-border music award for his "A Journey of Water" featuring folk songs and sounds from nature that he collected in Taiwan's northern Ilan county.

Over 80 soloists or groups from Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia were nominated in 33 categories in the 16th Golden Melody Awards this year.
