Eight people were confirmed dead Saturday afternoon from a bus accident that occurred Friday in Xiamen City, east China's Fujian Province, local police sources said.

The accident took place at around 5:15 p.m. Friday when a bus carrying more than 30 off-duty workers fell off an overpass at Shigushan in Xiamen. Five people were killed immediately, and the others were sent to three local hospitals. Three subsequently died from their injuries.

Among those hospitalized, 11 were seriously wounded but in basically stable condition, local police said.

The bus was being rented by a local forging machine tool plant from a local commuter service company.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
