Nearly 100 reporters from mainstream domestic websites -- such as people.com.cn, xinhuanet.cn, chinadaily.com.cn, sina.com.cn, sohu.com, and tom.com -- yesterday started touring Central China's Henan Province in a bid to give a full coverage of the local economic development, reform, and opening up.

This is the fourth time Henan has held such an activity to acquaint web users from both home and abroad with the province's humanistic features, social development, and the great changes brought about by the reform and opening up policy.

During the week-long trip, the reporting team will visit 10 prefecture-level cities of Henan -- Zhengzhou, Kaifeng, Luoyang, Anyang, Nanyang, Xinxiang, Xuchang, Luohe, Jiaozuo, and Jiyuan.

This activity, known as "Looking Around Henan Through the Internet," was first launched in 2002 when the Internet began playing an increasingly important role in providing instant and extensive information and affecting public opinions. Meanwhile, the number of Chinese web users has been on an upward bell curve over the past few years.

Henan, China's most heavily populated province, is blessed with a raft of historic relics as one of the birthplaces of the Chinese nation. It is also one of China's major agricultural product bases and has set up a complete industrial system with a focus on weaving, food, metallurgy, building materials, machinery, petroleum, and chemicals.

Henan saw its gross domestic product top 800 billion yuan (US$96 billion) in 2004, with its total economic volume ranking fifth in China.
