Two Anhui Province natives who robbed prostitutes were handed lengthy prison terms by the Changning District People's Court yesterday.

Ni Guoqing, 26, was sentenced to 13 years in prison and his accomplice, Zhan Yongfeng, 25, received an 11-year term.

Both Ni and Zhan were unemployed and turned to robbery to earn a living.

"But they had their own ideas about choosing victims," said Jin Wenbin, a court official. "They only stole from prostitutes because they thought these women are wealthy and easily robbed."

On the night of September 30, 2004, the two men went to the Jin Yu Lan nightclub and left with prostitutes surnamed Liu and Yan, taking them to a hotel on Wuzhong Road, the court found.

After they entered the room, the pair bound the women, beat them and threatened them with knives, demanding money, according to testimony.

The robbers took three mobile phones, a platinum ring and 15,600 yuan (US$1,880) in cash.

Two days later, they visited the Di Hao nightclub and again hooked up with two prostitutes, the court said.

This time, they followed the women to their residence and robbed them there, according to testimony.

The court heard that the men committed four crimes using the same methods in late September and early October and made off with 34,300 yuan cash and 14,700 yuan worth of property.

They were finally caught when they tried to rob two women on October 5, authorities said.
