Thirteen rebels of the New People's Army were killed in two seperate clashes in the Philippines over the weekend, the military said.

On Sunday four guerrillas were killed and a range of explosives recovered following a clash in the southern Philippine province of Surigao del Sur.

And on Saturday nine guerillas were killed in a firefight in Camarines Norte province about 200 kilometres (124 miles) south east of Manila.

The police director for the region, Jesus Versoza, said the identities of the nine rebels had yet to be established. He said several firearms were recovered at the scene.

The firefight took place late Saturday afternoon near the town of Labo on the border with Quezon province following the hijacking of a van.

Then on Sunday, army scout rangers surprised four rebels while on partol near San Agustin town in Surigao del Sur, according to military spokesman colonel Buenaventura Pascual.

He said the firefight lasted about half an hour and resulted in the recovery of a truckload of explosives with detonating devices, assault rifles and revolvers.

All items were discovered inside a cave near to where the fighting took place, Pascual said.

Formal peace negotiations with the National Democratic Front (NDF) have been indefinitely suspended since August last year following the reclassification of the CPP-NPA-NDF as terrorist organizations by the United States and its allies.

The NDF have have accused Manila of not trying hard enough to remove them from the US list, but Philippine officials maintain their removal depends solely on their actions.
