Boycotting Japanese goods to hurt China basket bbs.chinadaily.com.cn Updated: 2005-04-25 14:29
Some Chinese are calling for a boycott of Japanese goods to deal a blow to
Japanese economy. But in my opinion, it will also have great negative effects on
China's economic development.
First of all, with the economic globalization, it is more and more difficult
to define whether a product is Japanese product or not. What kind of criterion
do we use, origin of the brand or place of production? As we all know, many
Japanese products are being produced in China. If we all boycott Japanese goods,
all the Chinese employed by Japanese enterprises will lose their job.
Second, blindly boycotting Japanese goods will damage China's hard
established investment environment and endanger the domestic stability. If we
vent our anger towards the Japanese government and right wing on the Japanese
investors and enterprises, the regions that house Japanese enterprises may
plunge into chaos.
Third, blindly boycotting Japanese may hurt the Japanese that are friendly to
China. The Japanese economic circle have contributed to China's economic
development and most of the Japanese investors are friendly to China and are
opposed to Japanese right wing. If we boycott their products, is this in China's
national interest?
In general, we still need Japan's investment and technology and we should
never refrain from doing something for fear of a slight risk. If we boycott
Japanese products blindly, we, to some extent, are slapping an economic sanction
on ourselves.
