Updated: 2005-04-18 10:02

Lung cancer tops the list of cancers contracted by Beijingers, according to statistics provided by the Beijing Tumour Prevention and Treatment Institute.

Eighteen per cent of cancer patients suffered from lung cancer in 1977, while the figure for 2003 rose to 28 per cent.

Zhi Xiuyi, a doctor at Beijing Xuanwu Hospital, said 70 per cent of lung cancer patients had a history of smoking. Zhi said a smoker's chances of getting lung cancer are 40 times higher than non-smokers.

The doctor suggested people pay more attention to their living environment, diet and go for regular check-ups, the Beijing Star Daily reports.
