Serena uncertain if she'll play Fed Cup

Serena Williams said a sprained left ankle might prevent her from competing for the U.S. Fed Cup team next week against Belgium at Delray Beach.

"Hopefully I'll be able to play," she said Monday. "I have a little doubt."

The injury forced Williams to retire from her quarterfinal match Friday at Amelia Island.

"The ankle is OK," she said during an endorsement appearance in Miami Beach. "It hurts, but not as bad as the first two days."

Williams said if she's unable to play against Belgium on April 23-24, sister Venus is eager to step in as a replacement.

Serena said she plans to enter at least one more clay-court event — in Rome — leading up to the French Open beginning May 23.
