The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has recognized the restoration work of two historic streets in Zhangzhou, China's Southeastern Fujian Province.

At a ceremony held in the city's Zhangzhou hotel on Sunday, the UN praised the city's successful work in preserving two streets that contain 400-year-old stone archways, a temple and historic buildings.

The UNESCO protection award is aimed at motivating individuals and organizations to protect ancient structures.

The project was awarded an Honourable Mention in the 2004 annual UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards program.
