Updated: 2005-04-11 09:18

Richard Hamilton scored 17 points as the Detroit Pistons took advantage of the absence of Shaquille O'Neal to defeat the Miami Heat 80-72 Sunday and move within a game of clinching the Central Division title.

The Pistons dominated early in Miami and then withstood a determined Heat comeback in the fourth quarter to win their sixth straight game and beat their hosts for the second time in three meetings this season.

O'Neal missed his third straight game with a stomach virus and it hurt Miami, who posted season-scoring lows for a quarter, half and game while shooting just 34.6 percent, another season low.

The Heat have lost two straight games, only the fourth time all season that has happened to the Eastern Conference leaders.

Tayshaun Prince added 16 points for the Pistons, who led by as many as 20 points in the third quarter. Ben Wallace had 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Eddie Jones scored 19 points and Udonis Haslem had 13 points and 11 rebounds to lead Miami, but Dwyane Wade had just five points before fouling out in the fourth quarter.

Alonzo Mourning made his first start for Miami in three years after a kidney transplant and had 10 points, 14 rebounds and five blocked shots.
