Bayern Munich's Roy Makaay is optimistic about his chances of being fit to face Chelsea in their quarter-final on Wednesday. The Netherlands striker suffered a recurrence of his thigh injury in Bayern's 3-0 win over VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday and was unable to take part in training the next day.

Bayern also lost Claudio Pizarro to injury in that game, raising fears they would be without their first-choice strikers but Makaay has indicated his injury was not all that serious.

"Coming off against Wolfsburg was purely a precautionary measure," Makaay told German media on Monday. "We were leading 3-0, we had Claudio Pizarro injured and there was no need to go on risking me."

Makaay was still unable to join his team mates in a full training session on Monday but he did come through two light programmes and will travel with the squad to London.

"Losing both our main strikers would be somewhat problematic," Bayern coach Felix Magath said on Monday. "But I hope the problem with Roy is in hand by Wednesday."
