Tang Jie, secretary-general of the city government said it was groundless to claim that China's first deadly Ebola case had occurred in Shenzhen.

A report posted on a website said that a number of Shenzhen Customs officials contracted the Ebola virus from sailors aboard a foreign-registered ship when checking for contraband and that the infection "caused heavy casualties".

The report was then printed by the Singapore-based Lianhe Zaobao.

An investigation conducted by the local government showed there had been no such contact between Chinese customs staff and foreign smugglers.

Another probe carried out by the Shenzhen Health Bureau also found no evidence of any cases of Ebola in the city.
