Terry follows Adams' example

John Terry has set his sights on emulating Tony Adams as an England leader but claims he has yet to transfer his form for Chelsea onto the international stage.

Terry draws comparisons between himself and Arsenal legend Adams in terms of striving to make the best of every ounce of his ability.

He said: "I always give 100% and Tony Adams was very much the same and an inspirational sort of leader."

But the centre-back is also honest enough about his own form to insist he has "not made the step up" in terms of what is required for his country.

It is harsh self-analysis by Terry, particularly as coach Sven Goran Eriksson has indicated the Blues skipper has given him a selection headache for when Sol Campbell returns to fitness.

But it is also a demonstration of just how determined Terry is to become the very best - in the same way as Adams, who fought back in such style from his well-documented drink problems.

As for comparisons with Adams, Terry admitted: "I'm a similar sort of player. As a boy I used to watch him and pay a lot of attention to his game and try and put it into my game.

"We are both from the same background, both from Essex and both grown up from nothing really. We are both so determined to do well and better ourselves and never take anything for granted."
