Midnight Dita (City Weekend) Updated: 2005-03-28 15:42
In this city of restaurants, it's not always that easy to find
somewhere to eat. Finding a place to dine after midnight can be a tedious
exercise, as it seems that most eateries have had their doors closed for a few
hours by that time.
Cue DITA Supper Club, a South Asian concept
restaurant catering to the hungry Shanghai after-hours crowd. If sobriety, as
well as satay, is what you crave after a night of partying then this may be the
spot for you. White marble on white leather give this room the over-sterilized
feeling of a THX 1138 mess hall or Western hospital. Bright - is that an
operating lamp? - lights allow even the groggiest of patrons ample view of their
fare.
DITA offers a broad spectrum of South Asian cuisine, with Chinese,
Indian, Thai, Indonesian, and Vietnamese influences among others. Curries,
soups, and noodles are the menu's main focus. The appy section is worth a look.
Try the Vietnamese-style spring rolls YY16 with hot sauce. Less inspiring was
the not-too-"crispy pork salad" YY32. The chicken in green curry YY36 might have
been slightly better had it been heated up properly before arriving at the
table.
To be fair, our friendly server made absolutely sure that we
always had a sufficient supply of paper napkins before us. Probably wise when
dealing with drunken revelers. But hey, I wasn't drinking. In fact, DITA Supper
Club does not offer a drink list. Perhaps this is in order to preserve its
sobering atmosphere. Those patrons desiring a nightcap will have to venture
either downstairs to the Lava Disco or upstairs to the Havana Wine Bar.
