Federer, Sharapova win tennis awards

Wimbledon champions Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova were three-time winners at the inaugural Pro Tennis Choice Awards on Tuesday night.

Coming off a year in which he won three Grand Slam events and 11 singles titles, Federer was the easy choice for the ATP's Player of the Year. He was also voted the Fans' Favorite Award by ATPtennis.com users and was named the Stefan Edberg Sportsman of the Year.

Sharapova won WTA Tour Player of the Year after winning her first Grand Slam event at Wimbledon and claiming four titles. The 17-year-old Russian also received the Most Improved Player award and the Fans' Favorite award.

Also in the joint ATP and WTA Tour ceremony, Andy Roddick received the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian of the Year Award; Serena Williams (news - web sites) and Tommy Haas were the Comeback Players of the Year. The ATP's Most Improved award went to Joachim Johansson, and Tatiana Golovin and Florian Mayer were named Newcomers of the Year.
