The AC Milan defender was unable to train normally because of an ankle injury and, after consultation with national team doctors, it was decided he would benefit from rest and treatment.

Coach Marcello Lippi has not yet called up a replacement for Nesta, one of the key figures in the Italy defence.

Striker Vincenzo Montella also sat out of training at the national team's Coverciano headquarters in Florence today but remains with the squad.
