Beijing won't cut corners to improve English (China Daily) Updated: 2005-03-17 11:48
Beijing has a corner on the English market. And it has decided that the way
to improve its citizens' English ability is to put a new emphasis on the Queen's
language by establishing "English corners" in all districts and counties across
the city.
Liu Yang, a municipal official said English corners would be located in
public places like parks, each with an area for 200 or 300 participants to yak
up a storm.
The Beijing government hopes the corners will provide additional
opportunities for local residents to practise their oral English, the Beijing
Evening News reports.
