Wall-to-wall,墙到墙,这究竟是什么意思呢?
Wall-to-wall最初被用来形容房间里铺满了地毯,从一边的墙根到另一边的墙根,例如:wall-to-wall
carpets(满铺地毯)。后来wall-to-wall的含义逐渐延伸,开始表示“到处可见的,普及的”,例如:wall-to-wall people
at the reception(招待会上所有的人);wall-to-wall luxury(到处可见的奢侈)wall-to-wall
newspapers(满坑满谷的报纸)。
来看一个例句:I went to this cocktail party last night but I walked out after
fifteen minutes. It was wall-to-wall people - so crowded I couldn't even
get close to where they were serving food and
drinks.(我昨晚去参加那个鸡尾酒会,但是我进去十五分钟后就走了。屋子里挤满了人,挤得我根本没有办法靠近放食品和饮料的地方。)
