Up to 200 couples from 23 countries will strut their stuff at Luwan Stadium this weekend in a pair of dance competitions organized by the International Dance Sport Federation.

Competitors will compete in the Grand Slam Latin Series and the Open Standard Shanghai.

Couples in the Latin Series will show off their skills in the Samba, Rumba, Cha Cha Cha, Paso Doble and the Jive. The event will include 10 of the top 12 couples in the Latin world rankings, including Denmark's Klaus Kongsdal and Viktoria Franova, who are considered the best in the world at the sport.

Those in the Open Standard will dance the Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Slow Foxtrot and the Quickstep.

This is the second successive season that Shanghai has hosted a major IDSF event. The 2004 IDSF World Youth Standard Championship, held last November, put the city on the map of competitive dance sport.

"Dance sport is popular at the grass roots in town," said Yan Jiadong, an official of the organizing committee. He says many locals practice Latin or standard dancing at parks and squares around the city.

"Electrifying professional dancing performances will definitely serve as an inspiration to either dance lovers or ordinary people and give the sport a further boost," Yan said yesterday.
