Fish bred in the West Lake are expected to share the glory of China's most picturesque resort as fishermen there are seeking to put a trademark on them to profit from the resort's cultural value.

The fishing contractor of West Lake has applied for the trademark of "West Lake Ecological Fish" for all fish living in the lake, the Oriental Morning Post reported.

"In a few months, all fish caught in the West Lake can bear this trademark which suggests the fish are not fed by people, is unpolluted and tastes as delicious as wild fish," said Cao Zhixing, head of the fishing team of the administration office of the West Lake, a unit of the Hangzhou Bureau of Landscape and Cultural Relics.

The West Lake, a major fish production site of the city, produces 150,000 kilograms of fish every year, Cao told the newspaper.

Currently, of the nearly 30 varieties of fish, most are chub and big-headed fish, he said.

West Lake fish is the main ingredient of the West Lake Vinegar Fish, one of the most renowned dish in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province.

"While both the name of the lake and the dish are famous, we thought it prudent to make the fish famous and dig into its commercial value," Cao said.

Cao's team started to contract the fishing business at the lake five years ago. Steadily, the annual contract fee has risen to 1.35 million yuan (US$163,000) last year from the original 400,000 yuan.

The trademark application is one way to raise the value of the fish, Cao said.

In addition, the team plans to raise the percentage of salmon, crab and mullet, which have higher value, in the lake to help hike proceeds, according to Cao.
