Movie about former soccer star Garrincha shown in Brazil
The tragical side of the life of one of the top idols of Brazilian soccer, Manuel dos Santos "Garrincha," was presented in a biographical movie shown for the first time Friday in the main cities of the country. Garrincha, Lonely Star, produced by Band Filmes, is based on the biography published by journalist Ruy Castro in 1995 and wsa directed by Milton Alencar. "Not only did I sought to show inforgetable plays, but also the problems he had in his life, like knee lessions, alcoholism and his different love affairs," said the moviemaker. Garrincha was a genious in the attack, who in spite of his humbe origins became the favorite of Rio de Janeiro team Botafogo, to then take part in the national team that won the World Cup of Sweden 1958 and Chile 1962, which were the first major victories of the Brazilian national team. Garrincha was seriously affected by alcoholism after his retirement, and died in 1983. The life of Garrincha had already been depicted in the cinema, in the film "Garrincha, the Joy of People," by Director Joaquim de Andrade.
