Wilson left the game with 1:03 left in the first half after banging his right shoulder against J.R. Reed's leg on the kickoff after the Patriots' first touchdown. He did not return for the start of the second half, with Dexter Reid taking his place.

Wilson injured his groin in last year's Super Bowl and could not finish the game.

The Patriots also had a scare when Rodney Harrison hurt his arm in the first quarter after landing on it on an interception. But Harrison returned on the next defensive series.

Harrison also was injured in last year's title game, breaking his arm. Despite missing both safeties, New England beat the Carolina Panthers 32-29.

The Patriots have struggled to field a secondary all year, with season-ending injuries to cornerbacks Ty Law and Tyrone Poole forcing them to sign Hank Poteat off the street after the season ended and to use receiver Troy Brown as an extra defensive back.
