Authorities in Baishan City, northern Jilin Province, yesterday approved the arrest of a man suspected of seriously injuring his girlfriend by etching words across her body.

The victim, 42, began to live with the 52-year-old man, identified as Zhou, last April.

In October when she wanted to dump him, Zhou detained her in their residence, police said.

Zhou allegedly dipped a sewing machine needle in ink and carved out defamatory phrases, consisting of more than 100 Chinese characters, over her body.

Experts said the ink had settled in more than 34 percent of her skin. Li's relatives discovered her in December and reported to police.

Zhou fled to Shandong Province but was caught last month.
