VE joins China's effort for sustainable development

After the first successful roundtable conference held in France in February 2004, the second Chinese and French mayors meeting held in Chengdu, China on January 24, 2005. Discussion focused on urban planning, construction, development, management, and sustainability. Due to the extremely close relationship between urban sustainability and environmental protection, and the tremendous experience of VE in environmental servicing, Henri Proglio, President of Veolia Environement had been invited to attend the roundtable and offer views on planning and developing urban cities in China.

Sustainable development is the key principle in city planning, construction, development and management, with environment, energy and transportation being the essential elements throughout the various stages.

Veolia Environnement has more than 150 yearsĄŻ experience partaking in the design and construction of municipalities. In mid 19th century, the group was awarded a concessionary agreement for the supply of potable water to the city of Lyon in France.

At the same time, VE provided urban services such as the installation of rails, waste and water management, heating and electricity supply to other cities like Paris, Marseille. Over the years, VE places top priority on sustainable development, a value that is persistent in all its four areas of business: water, waste, transportation and energy services.

Henri Proglio, 53 years, graduated from HEC (top French Business School). He joined Compagnie G¨Śn¨Śrale des Eaux in 1972.

In December 1990, he became the Chairman of CGEA. In 1996, he was a member of the Board of Directors, then in 1996, Vice-President of G¨Śn¨Śrale des Eaux.

In January 1999, he was the Chairman of G¨Śn¨Śrale des Eaux and the Vice-President of VEOLIA.

In July 2000, he became President of Veolia Environnement.

Today, he is also a member of the Executive Committee of Fomento de Construcciones Y Contratas (FCC- Madrid) and a member of the Surveillance Committee of the main subsidiaries of Veolia Environnement in France and abroad, as well as companies such as Vinci or Elior.

Henri Proglio has received the French Order of Merit and the Legion of Honour Decorations.
