Arsenal midfielder Jermaine Pennant has joined Premier League Birmingham City on loan for the rest of the season only hours after being charged with drink driving.

"We wish Jermaine the best of luck during his time with Birmingham City," a statement on Arsenal's website said on Monday.

Buckinghamshire officers arrested the 22-year-old player on Sunday for crashing a Mercedes Benz into a lamp post. He was later released on bail.

Pennant is due to appear at Aylesbury magistrates court on February 1.

"Police were called to Park Street in Aylesbury at 0600 GMT following reports that a car had collided with a lamp post," a Thames Valley Police spokesman said.

"Officers attended the scene and arrested the driver of a Mercedes."

The former England under-21 player made his Arsenal debut against Middlesbrough in November 1999 aged 16, becoming the Gunners' youngest ever first team player.

However, he has failed to break into the side on a regular basis and spent last season on loan at Leeds United, who were relegated from the top flight.
