China to see fewer sandstorms this spring

Fewer and weaker sandstorms will hit China this spring thanks to the improved environment in areas of the northwest, said the China National Environmental Monitoring Center, Friday.

Northern and central Inner Mongolia, one of the sources of sandstorms, have been planted with vegetation, which will reduce the possibility of sandstorms, said the center's sandstorm monitoring network. The northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and Shaanxi Province, the main place where sandstorms develop, have been covered with more trees and grass. Beijing, a frequent target of sandstorms, may have cleaner air this spring, it added.

But the broad environment in northwest China has reported little improvement and has worsened in northwest China's Guansu Province due to the dry weather.

Most of north China will be free from sandstorms this month except areas in Xinjiang and western Gansu, the center said.
