Jay Chow tops Chinese music chart awards

The 11th Chinese Music Chart Awards were handed out Tuesday, with stars from Taiwan, Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland showing up and putting the spotlight on Shanghai. About 30 awards were presented.

As most winners were consistent with public expectations, which were a result of online voting, the awards were widely regarded as impartial and the ceremony was merely a celebration.

Taiwan pop singer Jay Chow was the big winner of the night, taking home four awards, including Best Male Singer in the Taiwan and Hong Kong Region, Most Popular Male Singer, Best Singer-Songwriter, and Best Song. He also composed Pirate, which won Best Music Video in the Taiwan and Hong Kong Region. Chow definitely set a high standard on China’s music charts this year.

Taiwan soul singer Jolin Tsai won Most Popular Female Singer in the Taiwan and Hong Kong Region. She also won Best Music Video Award with the fabulous Pirate, in which she acted as both a pirate and a princess.

Best Female Singer in the Taiwan and Hong Kong Region went to Jasmine Leung to reward her achievements of the year.

Veteran singer Sun Yue won Most Popular Female singer of the Chinese mainland. Best Female Singer on the Chinese mainland was Ye Pei, mostly known for her campus-style songs.

Among awards for the Chinese mainland, Hu Yanbin was selected as Most Popular Male Singer. Sun Nan regained the Best Male Singer title after losing it last year. Pu Shu was rewarded Best Singer-songwriter.

Age of Water and Wood, a duet band by two former students from Qinghua University, won Best Band. Widely acknowledged for their talent in singing and composition, the two band members now pay more attention to their appearance. Their new image brought fans a great surprise. Taiwan band Energy was awarded Best Band in the Taiwan and Hong Kong Region.

Pop diva Faye Wong also took Best Single for Carrousel, and other Best Singles also included Taiwan pop group F.I.R.'s Our Love and Jay Chow's Qi Li Xiang.
