Israeli soldiers backed by tanks and helicopters arrested four suspected Palestinian militants near Gaza City in a pinpoint operation Wednesday, the army and witnesses said.

Helicopters raked an open field with gunfire during the early morning raid in which a wanted militant from Hamas, an Islamist militant group that seeks Israel's destruction, and three other suspects were arrested by soldiers on the ground, they said.

Media reports said the helicopters also fired missiles at the targeted area during the raid.

There were no reported casualties in what the army had described as a limited operation.

The raid was launched a day after Palestinian militants resumed rocket and mortar attacks on Jewish settlements, in a challenge to Palestinian moderate Mahmoud Abbas, who was elected Sunday as president, succeeding Yasser Arafat.
