Benitez, speaking after his team's 1-0 English League Cup semi-final first leg win against Watford at Anfield here Tuesday, said he hoped the 28-year-old forward would make his debut for the club in Saturday's home Premier League match against Manchester United after agreeing a four-year deal with Morientes.

"We are very close, it could be just a matter of hours. I am not sure exactly how far the talks have gone, but I believe we have an agreement and I want the deal completed as soon possible."

Benitez has been chasing Morientes for several weeks but earlier Tuesday Lyon confirmed they too had tabled a bid for Morientes, who played a major role in getting fellow French Championship side Monaco to the final of the Champions League last season during a loan spell.

But Liverpool is Morientes's preferred destination with the player apparently prepared to stay at the Bernabeu rather than move elsewhere in the event the English club's bid is rejected.

Anfield chiefs hope to have the deal tied-up on Wednesday and Benitez added: "We are ready with the medical and I hope the player is here very soon.''

Morientes has found himself surplus to requirements at Real behind local hero Raul, Brazilian World Cup winner Ronaldo and England striker Michael Owen.
