Jan Egeland, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, apeaks about relief assistance to meet the needs of countries affected by the tsunami in Asia, at the United Nations in New York, December 27, 2004. Countries around the globe have stepped forward with pledges of cash and assistance to the victims of the southern Asian earthquake and tsunami disaster. Rescuers scoured the sea for missing tourists and fishermen in Asia on Monday as emergency services struggled in the wake of a devastating tsunami that killed more than 22,700 people. The disaster spared no one. Western tourists were killed sunbathing on beaches, poor villagers drowned in homes by the sea and fishermen died in flimsy boats. [Reuters]
