The Toronto Raptors dealt four-times NBA All-Star
Vince Carter to the New Jersey Nets Friday for three players, including
Alonzo Mourning, and two first-round draft
picks.
Eric Williams and Aaron Williams are the other players moving to
Toronto in a trade which ends Carter's often stormy seven-year spell with
the Raptors.
Toronto receives the 2005 pick originally belonging to Philadelphia and
the 2006 first-round choice that was originally Denver's. The Raptors will
get to use the two selections based on where those teams finish in the
next few years.
"This trade accomplishes a number of things that will help us now and
in the future," Toronto general manager Rob Babcock said in a statement.
"In Aaron and Eric Williams we are acquiring two character players who
are tough, defensive-minded players. They will improve our defense and
rebounding, and they fit the philosophy that we're establishing in
Toronto.
"This trade gives us some financial flexibility now and in the future."
The Raptors meet the Nets in Toronto Sunday but the injured Carter is
not expected to play.
To make room for the new players
on their roster, the Raptors waived forward Jerome Moiso and placed rookie
forwards Rafael Araujo and Pape Sow on the injured list.
