Arsene Wenger has renewed his attacks on Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy's honesty just days after being fined by the Football Association (FA) for labelling the Dutch striker a "cheat".

The Arsenal manager's original comments were made following the champions' 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford on October 24 - a loss that ended the Gunners' English top-flight record of 49 unbeaten league games.

Wenger was angered by van Nistelrooy's knee-high challenge on Ashley Cole, which subsequently resulted in the forward being banned for three matches.

He said in a BBC TV interview: "We know how Ruud van Nistelrooy behaves. He can only cheat people - we know him very well."

On Thursday, Wenger was hit with a record 15,000 pounds (29,000 dollars) fine by the FA but the Frenchman remained unrepentant, telling the News of the World Sunday tabloid: "I said what I said about what was happening on the day of the game.

"Maybe I translated it in clumsy words but the FA found him guilty and suspended him for three games so you cannot say he didn't cheat the rules.

"How would you describe that? What do you say? Explain to me?"

Despite requesting a personal hearing, Wenger failed to turn up at the FA's London headquarters, where as well as being fined he was warned as to his future conduct.

But he added: "Was it an expensive sentence? No. I said what I had to say and nothing has changed.

"I knew it would cost some money. It is down to the FA to spend the money now.

"I take my responsibilities seriously after the game and I say what I feel I want to say.

"If you cheat with the rules I cannot find another word. In England it's a word you cannot say. I don't know why."

October's match was labelled the 'Battle of the Buffet' after Man United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was pelted with pizza and soup in the players' tunnel following the final whistle.
