Ten students have confirmed dead and 23 others survived from a boat accident that happened on Zhuhe River in Ziyang County of northwest China's Shaanxi Province Friday afternoon, county government sources told Xinhua Sunday morning.

The motor boat sank around 3:40 p.m. Friday while taking students from Xiangyang Village Middle School to Wafangdian of Shaanxi, according to the publicity department of Ziyang County Government.

Twenty three people were on board while the accident took place.

Preliminary investigation ascribed the accident to three major factors, namely extreme overload, panic among passengers to make the boat unbalanced and illegal shipping of the boat with wear and tear.

The boat accommodated 23 people (including crew), as against a designed capacity of 16 people (including crew), the publicity department added.
